1. The Core Definition and Essence of Image Density

Image density (color density) is a measure of the ability of a medium to absorb light, calculated as D = log₁₀(incident flux / transmitted flux). For CMYK four-color printing:

•The value is positively correlated with the thickness of the ink layer: the thicker the ink layer, the stronger the absorbed light, and the greater the density value (but after the ink layer exceeds the critical thickness, the growth of density tends to be flat, and the critical thickness of black ink is usually 3-5μm);

• Control essence: Density is an indirect index for color reproduction, and the four-color CMYK needs to be controlled synergistically to ensure that the dark area is not blurred and the light area is not lost in detail, while enhancing the detail and contrast in the dark area through black.

Combining ISO international standards, domestic specifications and industry practices, the mainstream reference value of four-color solid density (100% screen area) is as follows:

High density is prone to color bias, and a density difference of 0.05-0.10 needs to be maintained with cyan to ensure gray balance.

Lowest density color plate, too thick can easily cause color turbidity, and the difference in density with magenta needs to be ≥0.35

Black (K)

1.40 - 1.85

Fine printing: 1.6-1.85; General printing: 1.4-1.6

Determine the depth of the dark part, too low density is easy to show gray, too high is prone to dirt and poor drying.

Note: Halftone areas need to be adjusted in combination with the TVI (Tone Value Increase) curve, and the dot area density is usually 40%-50% of the solid density.

•Core principle: The four-color optimal density is back-calculated from the CIELab* colorimeter and the gray balance target, with the K color keying controlled in particular to maintain the L value (lightness) of the shadows to ensure purity in the dark areas;

• Overlap density requirements: CM overlap density ≥ 2.0, MY overlap density ≥ 1.8, CY overlap density ≥ 1.9, ensuring the saturation of secondary colors.

• Density calculation state: Domestic default T state, Europe often uses E state (more sensitive to K version measurement, density value is 0.05-0.10 higher than T state);

• Lighting conditions: Paper with fluorescent brighteners requires M1 conditions, and black ink measurements need to avoid reflection errors caused by direct light from the source, it is recommended to use a polarizing light attachment.

1. Tools and Calibration: Use X-Rite or Techkon series densitometer, calibrate with standard color target daily (reading error ≤ 0.03), and verify Lab value matching monthly with spectrophotometer;

2. Four-color synchronous measurement: select the CMYK solid color blocks, overprint color blocks, and gray balance blocks on the printing control strip, measure them in the order of "single color first, then overprint", and record the density and Lab values of the dual data;

3. Deviation Tolerance Upgrade:

◦Monochrome density fluctuation: ≤±0.07 (relaxed from CMY standard as K plate density range is wider);

◦Four-color relative deviation: C and M density difference ≤ 0.15, K and CMY maximum density difference ≤ 0.40;

1. Dynamic adjustment mechanism: After changing ink / paper, in addition to the separate calibration of the density of the single color, it is necessary to print an additional 30% of the dot gain sample after the gray balance is adjusted ΔE≤1.5 before mass production.
